It is definitely the season for ATV riding in Texas. Whether you are out riding with the family or just running with your friends, it’s tough to find a better way to spend an afternoon than off roading on your ATV. The folks at ATV Discounter want to help make sure your riding stays fun and safe, and offers the following tips about safety gear and protective clothing.
In order to make sure that all of your four wheeling stays fun and exciting, it’s important to wear the right kind of safety gear. The one thing that can ruin your ATV experience is someone getting hurt, but that doesn’t need to happen as long as you follow the rules of responsible riding and wear the appropriate clothing.
Your first decision in safety gear is your helmet. It’s important to get a good quality helmet to ensure that your have the right fit. Helmets come in a variety of styles and the best two choices for ATV riding are the full-faced helmet and the off-road motocross helmet. The full-faced helmet offers the most protection, with a full-face shield and moulding that extends over your mouth and chin for extra protection. The off-road motocross helmet is great for those riders who love a rigorous and exhilarating off road ride. It covers most of your face and has a solid piece of moulding that covers the jaw and chin plus excellent ventilation on the sides, top, mouth and nose. There is also a flip up visor that provides a face shield when in the down position.
Make sure you wear good quality leather gloves when out on your ATV. Leather provides excellent protection from flying debris, abrasions, windburn and sunburn. Choose gloves that fit well and give you plenty of grip on the handlebars.
It’s important to wear thick boots, preferably made of leather or heavy-duty rubber. You need to wear boots that come up over your ankles to provide comfort, safety and protection. Buy your boots one size larger than your shoe size to allow room for extra socks. The boot should fit snugly at the top to seal out the elements and fit well throughout so you have excellent contact with the ATV to provide superior control.
Your protective clothing should include full-length pants and a long sleeved shirt. Even though it sounds great to jump on in cut offs and a t-shirt, you need to keep your skin protected from the sun and the wind and full-length pants and sleeves will also protect against abrasions.
