Abyssinian Development Corporation

Synopsis

The Abyssinian Development Corporation (ADC) is a non-profit community development corporation dedicated to working within the Harlem community. The organization started in 1989 as the result of a call from the Reverend Dr. Calvin O. Butts III. Starting from the basement of the Abyssinian Church with a mere $50,000 grant, ADC has grown into a nationally known corporation.

As part of their ongoing work, the organization sponsors a number of educational and youth programs. These programs include, but are not limited to:

Annie G. Newsome Head Start

This program provides educational opportunities for the youth of Central Harlem. ADC is a sponsor of this program. The Annie G. Newsome Head Start program provides pre-school children with education, medical and developmental screening and intervention services, among others.

Thurgood Marshall Academy Lower School

This program was launched in September, 2005 with 63 students. 52 new public schools opened in New York City in 2005. It is the only elementary school. The school intends to expand with a new grade each year. The school features quality education and focuses on small classes and individualized attention.

Abyssiinian Development Corporation is the community-based sponsor for TMALS.

Harlem Economic Literacy Program

ADC also administers the Harlem Economic Literacy Program (H.E.L.P.). This program provides local residents with tools and resources to help residents participate in the area's growing economic system. The four components of the program are designated as:
Money Matters
Homeownership
Entrepreneurship
"Youthonomics."

Youth Programs

According to the group's website, ADC's Gateway Builders Leadership Program serves youth ages 13-18 in afterschool and summer programs. The program fosters enhancement of academics, cultural discovery, recreational engagement and leadership in regards to transitioning to college, work and civic involvement.
