American Action Fund For Blind Children And Adults

Synopsis

The American Action Fund For Blind Children And Adults was started in 1919 and was originally called the American Brotherhood for the Blind. The original name was taken to illustrate the belief in the brotherhood of all mankind. However, times change and it was found that the very word 'brotherhood' came to signify, in many ways, exclusion. Though the goals of the organization have not changed, the name was changed to American Action Fund for Blind Children and Adults in 1990.

All the board members of the organization are blind and receive no financial compensation for their services.

The organization has office in Tarzana, California and Baltimore, Maryland and a force of volunteer workers throughout the country. The Tarzana office houses a free lending library of Braille books for blind children. These materials can be sent, free of postage, to people in the United States and Canada. The organization also publishes an international Braille newsletter.

The headquarters of the organization is located in Baltimore, Maryland at the National Center for the Blind. The National Center for the Blind was established in 1978 and serves the needs of blind people throughout the country. The National Center for the Blind is located in a renovated manufacturing facility that comprises an entire city block.

The American Action Fund for Blind Children and Adults is a service agency which specializes in providing services to blind people that are not available from existing programs and systems. The focus of the program is on the needs of children, the elderly and those who are both deaf and blind.

The organization is deeply committed to providing services that include, but are not limited to:

securing reading matter for the blind
providing education for the public regarding blindness
educating the public about blindness
giving aid to the deaf-blind
providing specialized aids and appliances to the blind
consulting with agencies serving the blind
offering assistance to older blind persons
offering services to blind children and their parents

The Action Fund also administers a program of scholarships and financial and other specialized assistance to individual blind persons, conducts seminars regarding blindness, and provides information to senior citizens, many of whom must learn to cope with vision loss in their later years.

The International Braille and Technology Center for the Blind is also located at the National Center for the Blind. The American Action Fund assisted in establishing and equipping the International Braille and Technology Center for the Blind so that any interested party can have the opportunity to explore and evaluate the various kinds of computer-access devices now available to the blind.
