Arthur Ashe Youth Tennis And Education
SynopsisThe organization was founded in 1952 by William J. Clothier and was originally called the Philadelphia Tennis Patrons Association. Since that time the organization has come to include the Arthur Ashe Youth Tennis Center (AAYTC), which began in 1983. Then, in 1996, the organization merged with the National Junior Tennis League of Philadelphia to become Philadelphia Youth Tennis. Finally, in 2003, the name was changed to Arthur Ashe Youth Tennis and Education.
The mission of AAYTE is "to create and promote opportunities to improve the quality of life of young people through tennis and education." The AAYTE works primarily with at risk children ages four to eighteen years. AAYTE provides these youngsters with positive life lessons through recreation, academic and mentoring services. It attempts to teach self-discipline, self-reliance, good sportsmanship and non-violent conflict resolution in a constructive and nurturing environment.
AAYTE annually provides opportunity, qualified instructors and equipment to more than 8,500 children. Most of these children participate at no cost through the AfterSchool and Community Programs, The Arthur Ashe Youth Tennis and Education Center indoor programs and the National Junior Tennis League's outdoor summer program. The program helps to provide a haven of safety during after-school hours and during summer breaks. These programs teach positive lessons and help build confidence and personal discipline. Using tennis as the vehicle, the programs teach positive, rewarding lessons, build confidence and provide a framework of personal discipline.
Some of the programs offered by the organization include, but are not limited to:
Arthur Ashe Youth Tennis and Education Center
Offers top quality instruction for beginners to advanced players. Children must be between the ages of 4 and 18 to participate. This is the only indoor tennis facility in the country that is exclusively for kids.
Community Program (Outreach)
This program is for children ages 6 through 18. It serves more than 400 children and provides such services as 1.5 hours of tennis instruction weekly to meet PA’s physical education requirement in elementary and middle schools.
AfterSchool Tennis and Tutoring Program
To emphasize academics, children must prove their grades are satisfactory to play tennis. The goal is to encourage children to succeed both on the court and in life. Time is split between the classroom and the tennis court. This program is for beginners to low intermediate players in elementary and middle school.
National Junior Tennis League
NJTL programs are offered at 62 sites in Philadelphia, 2 in Norristown Borough and 2 in Camden. Players must be between the ages of 7 and 18. Players meet 5 days per week.
These are just a sampling of the many programs offered through AAYTE. Much more information is available at the group’s website.
