Big Brothers Big Sisters of America
Synopsis

Now over 100 years old, Big Brothers Big Sisters of America was founded in 1904, and is the oldest and largest youth mentoring organization in the US. The mission is to help children reach their highest potential through one-to-one relationships. These relationships have proven to have a positive, measurable effect on young people

Two broad based programs are administered by Big Brothers Big Sisters of America: community based mentoring and school based mentoring.

Community Based Mentoring

Both programs match up 'Bigs' with 'Littles'. Community-based Mentoring is the traditional relationship. This involves one-on-one time, in blocks of one hour per week, one hour a week, participating in shared interests and activities such as sports activities, playing games, taking walks or simply hanging out and talking.

Scheduling is flexible and is adjusted to meet the needs of mentors and young people in different kinds of situations. Some meet in the evenings or on weekend while others meet after school.

National and state statistics (more information is available at the group's website) show that children who are mentored in this way are more likely to improve in school and in their relationships with family and peers. They are also less likely to skip school.

School Based Mentoring
School-Based Mentoring is one-on-one mentoring that takes place in schools. It is not tutoring, nor is it a classroom program. It goes without saying that students do discuss school, homework or read with mentors. However this program is more about guidance and friendship.

This program has more than 125,000 volunteers in more than 6000 schools nationwide.
