A poised and well-spoken McDowell captured Michael Waltrip’s attention last year while competing for the ARCA RE/MAX championship. The 23-year-old finished second in the championship standings and captured the most wins (four), poles (nine) and more importantly Waltrip’s consideration to become one of his drivers. Last year, Waltrip signed McDowell and in October he received his first shot at one of NASCAR’s top levels debuting with Darrell Waltrip Motorsports in the Craftsman Truck Series ironically at Martinsville Speedway.
The next month, Michael Waltrip Racing fielded a second NASCAR Nationwide Series (formerly NASCAR Busch Series) entry for the Glendale-Ariz. native. In his first start, he showed patience and great promise with a top-20 effort at Texas Motor Speedway. Racing around the top-10 in the closing laps at Phoenix International Raceway the next week, McDowell recorded his career-best finish (14th) and went on to compete in the division’s season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
Now, McDowell is extensively testing to become prepared for his greatest feat as a competitor in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. McDowell is young and talented and looking back it’s not hard to see the natural progression that has led him to where he is today.
