Day 3: The Plaid Jacket Goes Green

There is more to reaching the green than making a strong drive. In fact, members of the Texas Kayak Fishermen managed to go green while paddling, not driving to the Colonial this week.

The Streams and Valleys organization has a tent set up by the will call booth where one can lock a bike or store a kayak or canoe. Several people took advantage of these facilities Thursday morning when they arrived by kayak on the banks of the Trinity River.

Doug Soto, one of the members of the TKF and part of the fleet that arrived at the Crowne Plaza Invitational today has been coming to Colonial on and off for about 10 years.

"This is my first time to take my kayak here," Soto said. "I'm going to spend the day here and then paddle back."

Adelaide Leavens from Streams and Valleys and an avid runner said the "Green Gate" set up outside the course is helping to promote preservation of the Trinity River facilities.

The green movement at Colonial this year has also taken place inside along the course, as well as along the banks on the east side of the course.

Peter Ripa, the tournament director for the tournament, said this is the first year that recycling boxes have been set up at the Invitational. Additionally, Hawk Electronics has set up cell phone recycling spots for people to pitch their old phones.
