Managing pain after a tummy tuck can be easier if the patient adheres to these guidelines.
A tummy tuck, known in medical terms as an abdominoplasty, is a risky operation just like any type of surgery. If one agrees to undergo such a surgery, they must consider the potential side effects of the operation such as possible physical complications and/or minimal to intense abdominal pain. The operation consists of several incisions that will more than likely result in some form of pain and swelling immediately after the anesthesia wears off. Postoperative pain is pretty inevitable with any tummy tuck operation, but is definitely a manageable derivative. There are several options when attempting to manage such pain. Most physicians and surgeons will prescribe pain medication and many nurses can teach patients effective ways of finding relief through over-the-counter medications as well as homeopathic options. Surgeons will consider medical history and both the severity and nature of the pain a patient is experiencing in deciding what type of relief to administer. Following the surgeon’s instructions is paramount in keeping pain to a minimum. It is wiser to take the suggested medications as scheduled than it is to try to taper off medication too soon. Laying in bed all day is not recommended for the natural healing process. Just because some form of mild exercise is suggested in order to assist with the healing process does not mean that rigorous exercise would decrease healing time. Taking it too far prolongs healing time and creates a risk of tearing the incision. Moderation is key. The most simplistic movements of the body’s organs can assist the patient in reducing the swelling and inflammation of the abdominal area. This avoids blood clotting and reinforces the patient’s immune system. As with any operation, given the complexity of abdominoplasty, there is a recovery time to take into account. Patients should avoid lifting any heavy objects during the healing process and make sure they get the proper amount of rest and drink plenty of fluids. Bodies need water to properly form new cells and repair damaged areas. Additionally, the body makes most of its repairs when the body is in deep sleep. Not resting. Sleeping.
Most importantly, patients who receive tummy tucks should keep their eyes on the prize. Minor discomfort is to be expected. Remembering the end goal can help relieve some of the annoyance that accompanies such discomfort.
