Choosing a Graphic Design College

Posted by Designer Meetup in Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, TX on Oct 29, 2008

There are many possibilities to consider when selecting a graphic design college. How do you choose the best graphic design college that is right for you? The first step is to decide what kind of degree or education that you will need to meet your career goals. Will you need a Bachelors degree to meet your career goals or will an Associates degree be appropriate for you? Likewise, what specialty are you interested in? The choices include animation, illustration, video game design, web design, and many more

Once you are clear on those points you can begin your search. The main points to consider are:

Location
Internships are an important step in developing your career whether they are completed while you are enrolled in school or after graduation. Graphic design college  located in cities where there are potential employers are good choices. If you are interested in a career in fashion design then a school in New York or Los Angeles would be attractive.

Quality of staff

You will want to be taught by instructors with several years of successful, real world experience in the specialty you are going to pursue. Aside from being able to offer useful insight into their subject, they may have industry connections that could help you when it comes time to find an internship or a job.

Cost
Whether you choose an expensive private school or a state school you will want to consider the return on investment you degree will generate. Be sure to check the school’s job placement rate. A private school with a great job placement track record might be a better choice than a less expensive school where few of the graduates find work in their chosen field. Another think to consider is how long it will take to graduate. Obviously, the longer you are enrolled in the college, the higher the cost will be.

Equipment
Check to see that the school has up to date equipment appropriate to the degree you are interested in. Animation requires more powerful computers than illustration. Are there enough computer work stations for every student or will you have to wait your turn to do your assignments? Graphic design is a software driven field. Does the school train you using the software that the industry is using today?

Career assistance programs
Good graphic design colleges should be able to assist you in finding meaningful internships and jobs. Make sure to visit this department when visiting potential schools. Does it seem to be a busy office full of activity or is it an empty desk? Trust your impressions.

In short, find a graphic design college that has the right program, in the right location, with the right teachers and equipment. You will be on the road to a satisfying career doing what you love to do.
