Sighting brown pelicans, the rare whooping crane, and fishing the prolific waters of Aransas, Copano and St. Charles Bays draw campers to this oldest of the Texas coastal state parks. Protected from coastal storms, the park's Lamar Peninsula is a forest of dramatic wind-sculpted trees and home to the "Big Tree," a massive coastal live oak estimated to be more than 1,000 years old that is one of the natural wonders of Texas. Goose Island features a camping area overlooking Aransas Bay but does not have a beach or swimming area.

In Aransas County and surrounded by the St. Charles and Aransas bays, Goose Island is often overshadowed by popular neighbors such as Aransas National Wildlife Refuge, Mustang Island State Park, Port Aransas and Rockport. But with more than 300 acres on the Texas Gulf Coast, the park's bird-watching, fishing, picnicking and bay-front camping make it a worthy destination, too.
Oh, and don't forget the resident Big Tree, a coastal live oak more than 1,000 years old and said to be one of the largest in the nation. The tree is 44 feet tall; it has a circumference of 35 feet and a crown spread of 90 feet.
