Laser Skin Rejuvenation for Men
Can lasers be used to treat skin
problems in Men?
Yes, for years lasers were mainly
used to treat women with skin problems. But lasers can also be used to treat
skin disorders in men. Laser skin resurfacing is very effective in treating
fine lines, mild acne scars and uneven discoloration of the facial skin. Laser
resurfacing is often used to treat lines around the nose, mouth, upper lip or
cheeks.
Do all men respond to laser
treatments?
Unfortunately no. At best laser
skin resurfacing only works well in about 70-80% of men. The exact reasons why
it does not work in all men are not known. The skin type, color, intensity of
lines and wrinkles also are important factors. Laser skin resurfacing works
best at treating the very fine lines and mild skin discoloration.
How is the laser skin
resurfacing procedure done?
Laser skin resurfacing is done at a
spa or a clinic like Evanesque in Dallas. Your face is gently rinsed and then the laser is used. The
latest lasers are small and can be held in the hand like a Pen. Each time the
laser is fired, you may feel a sting. The pain is mild and lasts less than a
second. The laser skin resurfacing can take anywhere from 45-90 minutes,
depending on the area being treated
Are there any preparations
required before the laser treatment?
It is important to stop any blood
thinners or aspirin at least 5-7 days before the treatment. Medicines like
Accutane or Retin-A should be stopped 6 weeks prior to the treatment. Further, one should avoid excessive sun
exposure or a suntan four weeks prior to the procedure.
What happens after the laser facial rejuvenation treatment?
Laser skin resurfacing is a
relatively easy and not associated with many side effects. After the
procedure, some individuals will develop:
- features of a sun burn
- redness
- burning
- tingling
- Itching
These side effects resolve within a
few days after the treatment. Sometimes small scabs may form over the treated
area and fall off in a week. One can go out during this time period and cover
the face with camouflage mascara.
When are the results of laser
skin resurfacing evident?
The results are not immediate. Soon
after treatment, the skin texture may appear red and rough. However, within a
few weeks, this will be replaced by softer, smoother and younger looking skin.
Is the laser associated with
complications?
Generally complications occur when
the procedure is performed by inexperienced staff. The complications of laser
are rare and can include:
-
Infection
-
permanent scarring
-
Skin discoloration.
These rare complications usually occur
when the laser is used to treat the deeper skin lesions.
How
long do the benefits of laser last?
The results of Laser Resurfacing are long-lasting, but not permanent. Some
individuals may see an improvement which lasts a few months and others a few years.
However, one needs additional therapy in future to maintain the cosmetic
benefits of the procedure.
