There are many types of Federal Student Aid available.  The basic form of aid is the Pell Grant, which is awarded based on need as determined by the FAFSA.  The Pell Grant is not a loan, and therefore does not have to be repaid.  Students with exceptional financial need may also be awarded the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant.

Students who do not qualify for a grant may receive other types of aid, such as loans and work-study.  Loans, such as the Stafford, Perkins, and Parent PLUS loans, must be repaid, though the government may pay some of the interest for students with financial need.  Federal Work-Study is a program where a student takes a job on-campus to earn money to help offset the cost of college.  

Though applying for Federal financial aid should be the first step, students are also encouraged to seek private scholarships wherever they are available.  By filing the FAFSA first, and doing independent research, students may find information about:

•    African American Scholarships
