FAFSA stands for Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The FAFSA is the essential document that must be filled out and processed in order for you to receive financial aid. The most important thing to remember about the FAFSA is filling out quickly and accurately. Although the deadlines may extend till the end of the school year, in order to qualify for the Pell Grant you must fill out your FAFSA at the earliest possible date. In order to be eligible for state grants you must have completed your FAFSA no later than March 1st.
You must also make sure to fill out your FAFSA accurately. You need to use correct information and if you are a dependent student, you must make sure that your parents fill out their part of the FAFSA.
After you have filled out the FAFSA you will receive you FAFSA pin. You will use your pin as your electronic signature. You may be wondering what kind of amounts of aid you may receive. One way to get a very good estimate is to fill out the FAFSA calculator. There is a tool called the FAFSA4caster that can give you very good estimates of what aid you may be eligible for and what part you and/or your parents may be responsible for.
