1) Acne – Stress causes worsening of acne in two ways: 1) by stimulating adrenal glands to produce more male hormones, 2) by slowing down the healing process. Male hormones are well known for stimulating the sebaceous glands to secrete more sebum, which ultimately results in the formation of acne. Dr. Adler has noted that within his 25-year dermatology career, there has been a significant increase in female adult acne patients, which today account for 50 percent of his acne patients.
2) Scaly, red skin – Eczema is an inflammatory skin disorder of varying severity that is characterized by patchy, dry, itchy and scaly areas of the skin. In more severe cases, the skin can weep, bleed and crust over. Stress does not actually cause eczema, but it can trigger a flare-up or make the condition worse.
3) Hair loss – Alopecia Areata, hair loss in a sharply defined area (usually the scalp), affects men, women and children. Hair loss occurs because the hair follicle stops growing and the hair falls out. A more critical form of hair loss is Telogen Effluvium or sudden hair loss after a traumatic event such as the death of a family member, child birth or a severely distressful event, such as a job loss. These events may trigger hair follicles to enter the resting phase prematurely in which an increase in the amount of hair shed will be noticed about four to seven months after the event.
