Ricky Ricardo, Mojitos, and Mambo

Just three great Cuban exports

Add La Cubanita to the list. Sure, it’s not technically a Cuban export, but it’s about as close a trip to Castroland as you’ll find in Dallas.

The newest restaurant from prolific restaurateur Alberto Lombardi features authentic dishes and inspired twists.

Crazy busy at night, this is still a fantastic somewhat undiscovered gem for lunch. At least for now. The cozy patio is perfect for whiling away a few hours sipping a fruity daiquiri or leafy mojito while having a “business” meeting. Of course, if your boss is really anti-rum breath, you can still order a Safe Sex on the Beach just because it’s fun to say, not just because it’s a virgin cocktail.

For starters, you can’t go wrong with the Cuban Cigars appetizer. While we don’t expect Chelsea Clinton to eat these (she’s still so touchy about all things Lewinsky), you’ll want to cram them in your mouth faster than Rush Limbaugh in front of a table full of Oxycontin and steak fajitas made from an inhumanely treated cow raised by a fundamentalist rancher.

Noontime standouts are the sandwiches. The traditional Cuban, filled with ham, pulled pork, pickles, mustard and ooey-gooey Swiss cheese, is right on target. Or venture out with the deliciously stewed shredded beef tastiness of the Ropa Vieja sandwich. They’re both practically big enough to share, and even if you’re not a fan of Yuca (misspelled on their menu as “Yucca,” which is a prickly cactus-like plant, not the starchy root), you’re gonna love the Yuca fries. Resist the temptation to substitute the lackluster shoestring fries made from traditional potatoes.

But it’s not just about lunch. The place is open ‘til 3:00 a.m. on weekend nights. It’s no Whataburger drive-thru taquito, but then again, that’s entirely the point.
