Regularly changing the filter for your air conditioning system is critical for your unit's overall performance.  Filter replacement should occur at least once every six months.  However, be aware that the cost of purchasing a new filter is much cheaper than the alternative of allowing an energy-inefficient air conditioning system to operate.

What is a filter?  Filters help collect dust and dirt running through your AC system.  If a filter does not get replaced within a reasonable amount of time, then it will no longer be able to attract new dust.  The remaining debris can cause severe mechanical damage to your system.

Most home improvement stores carry air conditioning filters.  Be sure that you purchase a filter that is compatible with your specific machine.  Remember, replacing an AC filter is the least expensive repair you can do.
