There are five kinds of programmable thermostats, each with their advantages and disadvantages.

  1. Electromechanical Thermostat: in case you have a regular schedule, this type of programmable thermostat is ideal for you. With an Electromechanical, or EM, you'll be able to adjust how many hours the air-conditioning/heating need to stay on and at what regulated temperature. This type of thermostat, however, is not applicable to heat pumps.
  2. Digital Thermostat: Digital thermostats work with a calendar to coincide with the optimal temperature and the times you will need it most.
  3. Hybrid Thermostat: the combination of EM and Digital thermostat, this type of thermostat offers the simplicity of the EM, with the customization of the digital.
  4. Occupancy Thermostat: Occupancy thermostat is used in structures that are rarely occupied, but need a controlled environment. They usually have one button which automatically activates the preferred degree temperature for only a predetermined period of time. Following the set time, the conventional temperature will go to its original setting.
  5. Light Sensing Thermostat: This thermostat reacts to the lighting conditions of your environment. They don't require batteries.

When purchasing your thermostat, check for an Energy Star Rating, which will gain you an increased energy efficiency of at least 10%. Call Glenn-Aire today to speak with one of our representatives about choosing the right thermostat for you.
