AED-Shop, a division of HeartSafe America, Inc., provides El Paso Independent School District (EPISD) with AED Data Management Solution Program and medical equipment.

In 2008, AED-Shop engaged in a program to provide the El Paso Independent School District a protocol program for the school district. AED-Shop’s initial deployment of the EPISD Public Access Defibrillation (PAD) program consisted of 136 AED’s, with a minimum of 1 Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) per campus. In addition to providing AEDs, AED-Shop helped the EPISD develop a training and protocol program to certify coaches, trainers and nurses. The EPISD is currently using AED-Shop’s Data Management Solution Program to record inspections, document incidents, and track CPR renewal dates and expiring parts.

In March 2007, AED-Shop coordinated with Betty Ritchley, the District Health Coordinator, to develop a plan to deploy the devices, coordinate the site assessment and organize the CPR/AED training for the entire school district. This plan was in accordance with the recommendation of the American Heart Association AED-certified program.

The Challenge:

In compliance with state Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) protocols, the EPISD needed to develop a training/protocol program and organize a plan to certify coaches, trainers and nurses for the El Paso ISD that:

  • Accumulated state protocol & regulatory information for the district.
  • Created an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) emergency response program protocol.
  • Created a “customer packet” for the EPISD Health Staff that guides them through program deployment.
  • Educated and guided the site coordinators, program manager and site facilities manager through the process.

The Solution:

AED-Shop presented a solution the above challenges that would:

  • Provide a medical direction, maintenance plan for monitoring the Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) equipment and the District-wide training program.
  • Develop a monthly review of the overall plan, equipment and training maintained by our online, web based data management system.
  • Help establish an outline/timeline to accomplish the necessary steps for implementation.
  • Devise a plan that would include initial research of formal protocols for the state of Texas and document them for El Paso ISD.
  • Perform site assessments for each location.
  • Direct the implementation of the wall cabinets in accordance with Texas state handicap laws and government guidelines.
  • Organize the central destination ane specific ship date for the Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) units.
  • Coordinate the delivery and cabinet installation of an AED unit with each school nurse, setting the cabinet alarm to ready and response mode.

We are happy to say that since the implementation of this program and supplies of AED medical equipment in May of 2008, El Paso school district has saved a young man utilizing an AED based on this program implementation.
