Conquering General Anxiety Disorder

You wake up and just can't get out of bed. You dread what the day may bring and can only assume the worst. If this is a common occurrence you may be suffering from General Anxiety Disorder or GAD. While these feelings may come over all of us from time to time, GAD is an all consuming feeling that makes it difficult to function even under normal circumstances.

The diagnosis of GAD is just the beginning and then you must decide on what you should do. Remember that self-diagnosis is not the answer. Seek a reputable expert's opinion before taking any course of action.

Here are a few suggestions on how to survive this misunderstood disorder:

1. Once you have been diagnosed with General Anxiety Disorder you need to accept it. Don't think that you can just ignore the symptoms and it will go away. There is always a root to this problem and you must find it and deal with it. However, remember that you may also suffer these anxiety attacks at times that are not even related to the cause. This is normal and you shouldn't worry.

2. It is recommended that you visit your doctor and go over your symptoms. After a proper diagnosis is made, your physician will decide whether further help is needed through a psychologist, psychiatrist, or another specialist of anxiety disorder. You may need medication to help with your problem or cognitive behavioral therapy. Your body and mind work like a vehicle, sometimes it needs a check-up to see what the problem might be and how to fix it.

3. Keeping a journal or diary could help you to understand what triggers these attacks and help you overcome some of the problems.

4. A positive attitude helps greatly. When wondering if the glass is half full or half empty, go for the half full theory. It may be difficult due to your anxiety, but with enough practice you will find that a positive attitude will help as a preemptive measure.

Learn about the causes of GAD and what your alternatives are. Besides prescription medication, there are natural homeopathic remedies that can be safely taken to curb GAD. Talk to your doctor about these less instrusive methods.
