Psychology Degree : Where Your Career Can Take You

A bachelor’s degree in psychology is not a bad idea. Certainly the first thought would be to continue and get the Ph.D. needed to teach, consult or to be a licensed psychologist. If any of those careers are enticing then the graduate degree is very important. The good news is that many people who hold degrees in psychology branch out into other industries and those businesses are very diverse.

Many graduates work in market research, management, social work, law enforcement and labor relations. About fifty percent of the graduates work for corporations and fourteen percent work in some sort of educational field. Sixteen percent work for an agency in government; thirteen percent work for themselves and nine percent work for non-profit organizations. As long as there is some form of interaction with people, a degree in psychology will rank high on anyone’s list of candidates. A psychology graduate can deal with human behavior and behavior patterns within any organization. It is a tool that will be of benefit in any business situation and most companies understand that.

The government has determined that the job market for psychologist will grow by ten to twenty percent through 2008 and the market for social workers who hold degrees in psychology will grow about thirty-six percent. The aging population will need mental and physical assistance over the next twenty years and psychology degrees play an important role in filling that need.

There are unlimited possibilities for people with psychology degrees and the money is not bad either. It’s not at the top of the salary scale but it’s not on the bottom. Today’s job market needs creative thinkers and people that are skilled in communicating. The demand for these talents will only increase as the twenty-first century continues to develop.

Anyone who has a psychology degree and is bi-lingual has an extra advantage in the job market. As the ethnic face of America changes the ability to converse in languages other than English becomes very important. Languages like Spanish, French, Arabic, Russian and Chinese will benefit anyone in the job market, but that talent along with a degree in psychology, is a powerful mixture as far as finding a job at better than expected wages.

There is also a demand for psychology graduates in other countries. With the globalization of industry, human behavior skills become increasingly more important. The shift in manufacturing and the age of computers has made the world seem smaller and more connected. The job market is not just a domestic search anymore it’s an international approach that considers candidates from all countries. That’s another reason why speaking another language is so valuable.

A psychology degree is a wise investment. The graduate can find work in almost any industry and in almost any country. The other benefit is that no matter what profession is chosen the graduate continues to learn from on the job experiences. He can be flexible and expand his awareness into other fields of interest. He can return to school and get a masters or doctorate degree while he is earning an income. He has the opportunity to learn in more ways than one and that’s an important ingredient in coping and expressing the nature of his own psychology.

In the never ending world of change that is known as physical life, it is important to know how to deal with people from all backgrounds and cultures. In order to do that effectively one must know how to deal with the self. A degree in psychology is the foundation for living an ordinary life in a non-ordinary way. The graduate understands what he believes and is able to identify some of the beliefs that make this world a melting pot of diversity in this school of consciousness.

Understanding aspects of consciousness is a science that begins with an understanding of psychology. Each new experience is an expression of consciousness. The graduate is able to accept the challenges that diversity offers and he does it knowing he will be fine no matter what job he chooses. Choices and the probabilties that manifest from them are endless.
