A psychological study or experiment includes several important steps that researchers must take in order to reach a conclusion. If one of these steps is skipped, the results of the study will not make sense. It is recommended to be as thorough as possible in order to find the best results.

Propose The Hypothesis

The first step that must be taken in psychological research is to find an interesting topic and make a hypothesis. Hypotheses are basically educated guesses about how two or more variables relate to one another. The hypothesis should be addressed as a statement in which the response either agrees or disagrees with the assumption. The desired response to a hypothesis is a "true" or "false" conclusion. The hypothesis is the center of the entire experiment. The steps that follow revolve around this initial idea and assumption. Make the hypothesis as understandable as possible.

Come Up With A Research Method And Gather Data

The next step in the study is to choose a method of psychological research and collect the data. There are two methods of research, the experimental research and the descriptive research. Descriptive research is used in times in which conducting an experiment is difficult or impossible.

The third step in psychological research is to examine the data and to come to a conclusion. Researchers go over the results of the study, and with the statistical findings, they can analyze the results and find a specific explanation to their original proposal. It is best to go over the results of an experiment or study several times in case some minute detail was missed or overlooked. Being thorough in an experiment is key to a successful outcome.

Report The Outcome Of The Study

The last step is to report the findings of the study and produce the outcome. During this final stage, it is important to address the background of the research that was done. The initial hypothesis should be addressed in the conclusion of the experiment, as well as who took part in the study and how the participants were selected. The report should explain the different variables in the experiment and what role they played. Give details on the procedures that were taken to collect the data. Explain how the information taken was analyzed. And finally, address the meaning of the results.

These steps are important to explain to other researchers so they can replicate a study of their own. Each step taken during an experiment or study should be done in extreme detail and explained in depth. Psychological studies and experiments are published in academic journals or in other such publications so that other researchers can learn and understand an important aspect of the topic that was studied upon.
