Graduate School for Psychology Students

Graduate school requires much preparation. Whether you're a current college student making the transition from undergraduate to graduate school or you've been out of academia for a while and want to dive into graduate studies, going to graduate school is a huge decision that requires much planning. 

In the past, a college degree was enough to land you a great job. In today's society, that is the bare minimum and is often not enough to get a top job. Graduate school is a great way to hone your skills and knowledge, making you more marketable in this competitive job market. Psychology is one of the most popular majors in undergraduate studies; however, it is basically useless without  a master's degree, especially if you wish to hold any job in the field of psychology.

After you have determined that graduate school is the path you want to take, you need to shift your focus to preparing for this endeavor. The first step is to meet people. Spend time talking to advisors and other students in the psychology graduate program who can mentor you along the way. Work with your advisor to set up a timetable of the steps you need to take to prepare to enter graduate school. There can't be enough said about networking. The more people you know, the more assistance and help is readily available to you. An advisor will have many students to look after so try to connect to others in the psychology department as well. Don't be afraid to ask questions.

You must take the GRE or GMAT before you can be accepted into any graduate program. Check with your school to see which exam is preferred. Countless test preparation courses exist so that you can receive assistance. Take as many practice tests as you can get your hands on to ensure that you are comfortable with not only the material, but also the testing style.

Next you need to compose a curriculum vitae. This is similar to a resume and lists your academic achievements and accomplishments. It is your opportunity to express who you are, what you've done, and why you'd be a good candidate for a psychology graduate program. Most universities offer services to help you complete your curriculum vitae to ensure that it looks professional.

Make plans to attend any orientations that are offered so that you can familiarize yourself with the school and the program. Introduce yourself to any directors, professors or deans that you come across. Don't forget to check out any scholarships or grants that are available to you and start applying early.

This process may sound a bit overwhelming, but with the right amount of time and preparation, you will succeed. Getting a graduate degree in psychology can open many doors in the professional world.
