Psychology Major : What You Need to Know

Making the choice to major in psychology is a big step that will carry large responsibilities both pre and post graduation. According to The Psychology Club, students may have several misconceptions about choosing to major in psychology, from a particular course itself, to the career choices available after graduation. Some students may feel that:

1. Psychology is an easy subject
2. Psychology only involves working with crazy people
3. Majoring in psychology will help me avoid math
4. Research/statistics courses are only a requirment and don’t mean anything towards the major

These misconceptions have led to many students downfall when they realize just what is involved in majoring in psychology and what will be involved afterwards. Psychology is not an easy subject. Students must be able to understand and remember the material as they will be tested frequently. 

In order to major in psychology, students must know exactly what is involved. Though they will be entering a field that specializes in helping people, their only responsibilities will not just involve dealing with the mentally ill. In order to be successful both academically and professionally, students should research the field they are interested in pursuing. 

A psychologist is oftentimes responsible for developing community plans for better mental health, developing programs within organizations, as well as collecting research and statistics that will assist in properly diagnosing and assisting individuals; each task depends on the actual job and subfield of psychology. 

Research and statistics courses are not a requirement just to fill degree programs; these are very essential courses that provide the necessary tools to understand mental disorders in order to properly perform evaluations. Several careers can be attained with a psychology degree, many of which contain the use of research and statistics. In any health care profession, these elements serve a vital part of the entire industry. Not paying attention or getting poor grades due to the misconception that these courses are irrelevant is a major mistake that could be both costly and time consuming, as students will need to satisfactorily complete these courses to get a degree and eventiually a decent career. 

In order to major in psychology, a student must know that the subject can be quite stressful as they will be dealing with all types of people in the working world. People can be quite difficult to work with and this can lead to great stress for newcomers of the field. Students must also know that in order to get the right degree, they must know exactly what career they are aiming to craft. Limitations  are placed on those that don’t seek graduate classes after obtaining an undergraduate psychology degree.
