Program Notes

The first day of school went off without a hitch- thanks again to all of the individuals and businesses who helped us provide for our children!

Employees from Frito-Lay will be here this week to do yard work and get several other outside chores and we are grateful.

Prince of Peace Catholic Community in Plano will be visiting this week to see how their congregation can better meet our needs; they are a long time supporter of The Samaritan Inn.

Two more Gateway apartments were occupied last week- a one bedroom by a single man and a two bedroom by a single mother and her three children- this leaves us with only 4 apartments left and they will be filled by mid-September.

Every Gateway resident will soon have a mentor from the community; to help them navigate their new independence. Mentors and mentees will meet on a regular basis and hopefully establish a relationship that will provide support for them, outside of The Samaritan Inn staff. Mentor training will take place tonight and the program will officially begin on September 8th.

Please mark your calendars for the Ladies Tea and Fashion show to be held on September 7th at Heard-Craig Hall in McKinney. A three course tea will be provided by Tea and Mystery and a fashion show; showcasing our thrift store clothes will be presented. Tickets are $45.00- they may be purchased online or by calling Molly at 972-542-5302.

Thursday night we will officially thank all of the many sponsors for our 2008 Gala at a VIP party at Rick's Chophouse. Corporate sponsors now include: Capital One, Orthofix, McKinneynews.net, The Heart Place, Cantrell-McCullough, Turrentine, Pogue Construction, American Bank, Ebby Halliday, Rummer Medical, Eldorado Motors, All American Roofing, Abernathy, Roeder, Boyd and Joplin and Dr. Pepper! We are proud to partner with these corporations with conscience so that we can continue to provide for the homeless in our community. We also have an impressive list of table sponsors. Next week the invitations will be in the mail. we hope you will be able to attend!

Story of the Week

The Samaritan InnNichole is 25 years old. In 2006 she had a baby that was taken at birth by CPS because she tested positive for drugs. Nichole continued to use drugs and ultimately signed off her rights to the child. Signing off her rights was a traumatic experience and forced her to address her drug habit. She attended Narcotics Anonymous and has now been clean for 2 years. Nichole had a job and an apartment, but when her car needed massive repairs, she got behind on her rent and was evicted. She entered the Inn on June 10th. While here, Nicole has continued to attend her weekly NA meetings and she has received individual counseling to help her process the loss of her child. She has also been referred to mental health services where she was diagnosed as bi-polar and put on appropriate medication. Nichole works full time, has saved her money and will be graduating in mid-September.
Sincerely,

Lynne Sipiora
