First Presbyterian of Allen will host their annual Lil Lambs Consignment Sale, offering infants, children and maternity clothes at incredibly low prices. The sale benefits several charities including The Samaritan Inn. Sale dates will be October 9-11th.

The Ladies Tea and Fashion show to benefit the Inn last Sunday afternoon was a success- over 60 people attended as we showcased the fashions available at our thrift store. Special thanks to Sheila Williamson, who provided the tea and wonderful food and to Renee and Alex of the Lagniappe Salon who donated their time to do hair and make up for our models!

We have submitted a grant to the George and Faye Young Foundation to provide additional family beds- homeless families are the fastest growing group in the homeless population.

We have also requested re-funding from DSVP (Dallas Social Venture Partners) for our children's program.

The Nationwide Tour Championship will be held at the TPC at Craig Ranch on November 3-6. Tickets will be sold by Collin County charities for $10.00 each or a book of ten tickets for $90.00 and 100% of the proceeds will then be returned to the charity who sold them. A press conference will be held this morning to make this announcement- please contact us to arrange your tickets.

Las week we attended the annual Texas Homeless Network conference in Austin- as we met other service providers, we heard time and time again, how many of them rely on federal funds to stay open. This is always a precarious situation as federal grants come and go and they are always accompanied with a lot of conditions and requirements, we felt proud that the only federal funds we receive are from FEMA and CDBG (community development block grants) and they are just 6 percent of our entire budget.

Story of the Week

The Samaritan InnAnn is 25 years old and had been living with her husband and two children, ages 3 and 4. Her husband was arrested for possession of drugs and theft and, as a result, Ann and the children became homeless. They entered The Samaritan Inn in June and Ann was immediately referred to the Texas Workforce. They helped her find daycare for her children and enrolled her in several employment classes. Ann now has a job at a fast food restaurant where they have been able to coordinate her work hours with her children's day care hours. The children are also on the waiting list for the Head Start program offered through McKinney ISD.

Ann is saving her money, receiving counseling and attending weekly classes in parenting and budgeting. Our goal is to give Ann the skills she will need to live independently and to be an effective parent to her young children.
Sincerely,

Lynne Sipiora
