Program Notes

front road signThank you to Hunter Glen Baptist Church who has made massive contributions of food, including 50 turkeys and Emanuel Lutheran in Allen that just collected 600 pounds of canned goods.

Our Community Development Block Grant proposal to the city of Plano resulted in $32,000 to assist Plano residents living at the Samaritan Inn and $41,000 which will be administered by us, to Plano residents who need rental assistance.

Thanks to all federal employees who recently designated over $5,000 to the Samaritan Inn via their United Way payroll deduction.

It's hard to believe, but our Gateway apartments have now been open for one year and we will soon have our first graduate. Gateway was specifically designed to give shelter graduates additional time to become fully independent and its working- Gateway resident Janet and her five year old son are preparing to move into their own home this weekend!

Can you help? We need cleaning supplies- glass and floor cleaner, cleanser, disinfectants and toilet bowl cleaner. Donations of any of these items will be gratefully accepted at the shelter, at any time.cleaners

Story of the Week

The Samaritan InnJessica, age 40 and her 10 year old son arrived at the Samaritan Inn on February 10th after spending 30 days at Hopes Door. Hope's Door is a shelter in Plano for victims of domestic abuse. Jessica and her husband had been married for 20 years and she suffered significant abuse the entire time. He was demeaning, controlling, and violent. He would not allow her to have any friendships or learn to drive a car. Jessica's son had witnessed the abuse and had behavior problems.

Jessica is still not sure why she finally found the courage to leave, but she is so grateful that she did. At The Samaritan Inn she and her son are both in counseling and Jessica is a part of our vocational training program, as she has no job experience at all. And- she is learning to drive.

We believe Jessica will have the tools she needs to find a job very soon and then can begin to save her money and plan for independence.
Sincerely,
