Program Notes

front road sign

We are thrilled to announce a new partnership with Torchmark, a holding company specializing in life and supplemental health insurance, headquartered in McKinney. Mark McAndrews, CEO, has visited the Inn and offered up a variety of unbelievable opportunities-Torchmark's marketing department will assist us with a summer mail campaign that will help us raise the revenues we need in this difficult economy. Torchmark will also secure ten apartments in the community for people ready to graduate, but still not able to afford market value rents and Torchmark employees will volunteer in a number of areas of operation within the shelter. We are overwhelmed by the generosity of this "corporation with a conscience".

Please help us welcome Jim Malatich, our new Director of Operations. Jim is the former Executive Director of Crossroads Family Services and has thirty years of social services experience and a real heart for our mission.

Taste of Addison is this weekend and we still need volunteers to help. Remember, The Samaritan Inn is a beneficiary. There are shifts available Friday, Saturday and Sunday, please contact Cheryl at cherylspofford@thesamaritaninn.org to sign up or get additional information.

We currently have an immediate need for maternity clothes, size small (4, 6 or 8) for one of our residents. If you are able to help, please drop them off any time and mark them: Tammy

canned foodOn May 30th from 8am to 1pm Liberty Baptist Church will be conducting a huge food drive for the Samaritan Inn- it has been promoted in all of the local papers as well as multiple websites. Got Food? Head over to Liberty. For more information visit:  www.libertymbc.com.

The Jr. Samaritans from Plano West, Shepton and McKinney High Schools are busy at work with their fundraising teams this weekend . Team Extreme (Plano West) will hold a rummage sale on May 9 from 8am -1pm at 5902 Bent Creek Trail, Dallas.  The Shepton Samaritans (Shepton High School) are collecting tips for food served at Sonic, located at Midway, just north of Park in Plano, on May 9 from 10am - 5pm.  If you are in either of these areas, please stop by and support these teams as they strive to support The Samaritan Inn.

Our supporter John Rigo, a published poet, is donating proceeds from the sales of his two books of poetry to The Samaritan Inn thru June 1. Please take a moment to review and/or order the books; thank you for your support.

Story of the Week

The Samaritan Inn
Olga, 45 and her 5 year old daughter moved into The Samaritan Inn on April 6. Olga had previously lived in Michigan with her husband. Soon after their marriage he began using drugs and abusing her. She left him and stayed in a domestic violence shelter in Michigan until relatives in Collin County asked her to come here. She stayed with her relatives for awhile but soon felt she was a burden, so she came to the Inn.

Since arriving she has started divorce proceedings and applied for public housing. She has found a part time job and is continuing to look for a full time job. Her daughter attends school in Plano and receives special services because she is significantly hearing impaired. She has received one hearing aid but needs two; Olga is saving up for the second one.

Olga's caseworker says that Olga "hit the floor running" on the day that she arrived and she feels confident that Olga will graduate from our program within two or three months.
Sincerely,
