When it comes to buying a diamond engagement ring this wedding season, you need to know the meaning of the 4 Cs: Carat, Cut, Color and Clarity. The experts at Diamond and Watch Traders share the latest trends, demystify the 4Cs and help you select the right type of diamond engagement ring for your body type.
Life is marked by a series of significant events. Your first day of school, your first job, and then whammo ... you fall in love. It isn't long before you and your significant other start talking about engagement rings. What next? Well, consider this. Your diamond engagement ring, aside from your home, is probably one of the most important investments you will ever make. So plan to do some research before you buy an engagement ring, and invest wisely.

Barry Adler, a trusted importer of world-class diamonds, and founder of Diamond and Watch Traders in Dallas, Texas, says today's marketplace is flooded with confusing information and non-reputable sources. In order to make the engagement ring buying process less intimidating he offers the following advice about diamond trends, the "4Cs" and some other helpful hints to make your diamond purchase a happy one.

Trends
Celebrities are leading the way with the industry calls “fancy colored diamonds” (canary, pink, etc) that are more rare and much more expensive! If you like color, expect to pay a higher price.

Bigger is better. The one carat solitaire is no longer the norm. More and more carat solitaire engagement rings are in the three to five-carat range. Three-diamond engagement rings (one large stone with two stones on either side) like the one worn by Madonna are gaining in popularity. But at the end of the day, buy what you can comfortably afford.

4Cs of Diamonds
School yourself, and your future spouse in the 4Cs and decide what is most important to you. The 4Cs determine both the value and the beauty of a diamond.

The 4Cs of Diamonds are:

  • Carat - A diamond's size is measured in carat weight
  • Cut – considered the most important characteristic of a diamond, because a well proportioned stone offers the greatest fire, sparkle, and brilliance
  • Color – nature determines this and colors range widely
  • Clarity – how clear is the diamond. Are there any visible flaws?

What will look right on you?

Round diamonds are still the most popular, but emerald (square) shape diamonds as well as princess shapes have been gaining popularity in recent years.

Long, slender hands are complemented by a pear or marquis (diamond) shape.

If you have petite or shorter hands, round or princess cuts work best and don’t overwhelm the hand with an engagement ring.

Buying a diamond is a personal and emotional decision. Making sure you have the right information before you buy can provide you with a great deal of peace of mind and a quality diamond you and your spouse will enjoy for very long time to come.
