 tube sock

What do you use your tube sock for?

Last week I had an early breakfast with friends at Café Brazil.  We were enjoying eating our respective omelets, on the patio, that ridiculously hot morning.  There were very few patrons because of the early hour and we were happily waking up over cups of coffee, when two gentlemen arrived with two massive dogs.  At first glance, there was nothing all that unusual in their manner, nor their dress.  One man wore a kilt and the other was dressed in typical business attire.  Being the animal lovers that we all are we took notice of the dogs, watching them play as their owners ate.  At one point the larger of the dogs got a bit rowdy and pulled on the guy in the kilt’s chair.  He sort of rotated his seat and reprimanded the dog; then we spotted something peeping out of the top of his tube sock.

It was the butt of a rather large knife.   Who does this guy think he is?  It is rare enough to spot a kilt wearing gentlemen out in Dallas at such an early hour, rather then at a formal setting, but must he wield his machete so close to my omelet?

Nothing else exciting happened…  The knife stayed happily at home in its owner’s socks and the dogs had no more out bursts.  It was just a peculiar start to an otherwise ordinary day.  And I sort of forgot about the event all together.

It wasn’t until I was reviewing one of our client’s websites Kniveshoponline.com, that the whole incident came back to me.  Since then, I have been trying to identify the purpose that the tube sock knife might have served.

I understand that knives are somewhat of a staple for Texas living; useful to cowboys, law officers, hunting enthusiasts and just tough guys in general.  I even remember lots of my guy friends having some variation of knife from about age 8 on, but just how popular are these things…  The following numbers reflect WordTracker’s estimation of the amount of times each of these phrases are being searched for on various search engines including Yahoo!, Google and MSN.

Knives 1513 searches per day

Pocket knives 429 searches per day

Hunting knives 300 searches per day

Machete 291 searches per day

Folding knives   236 searches per day

Custom knives 169 searches per day

Swiss Army knives 220 searches per day

Victorinox knives 160 searches per day

Cold Steel knives 261 searches per day

SOG Knives 406 searches per day

So based on what I researched here are my conclusions:

  1. Knives are much more popular than I realized.
  2. I still think it was a machete, definitely not your typical pocket knife.
  3. I suppose I should be grateful that tube sock guy was keeping my friends and me safe from others with concealed weapons.
  4. And finally, that traditional Scottish dress for a man includes a kilt and a Skean Dhu (a type of knife that looks interiorly too small to have been the kind I saw) that is visible out of the top of his kilt hose (probably what I mistook for tube socks.)
