You may not be aware that the laws have changed and that the GI Bill rates 2009 have changed somewhat.  The amount of funding you are eligible for can vary based on your years of service, full time or part time enrollment, and other factors.  For participants in the Montgomery GI Bill, the new GI Bill rates, as set by law, set a maximum educational benefit of $1321 per month for a maximum of 36 months of enrollment, for a veteran with at least three years of service who attends full time.  Montgomery GI Bill participants also would have had to pay into the program an amount of $1200 upon signing up.

Under the new Post 911 GI Bill, rates differ somewhat.  The maximum educational benefit is now set at the most expensive undergraduate public university tuition within the participant’s state of residence.  If a participant wishes to attend an out of state school or a private school, he/she can attend a school that takes part in the “Yellow Ribbon” program, which covers the difference between the cost of attendance and the maximum benefit allowed under the Post 9-11 GI Bill.
