Specialty short run box maker launches November 2008 in Dallas Texas

Specialty short run box maker BoxWerkz.com launched their new business in November 2008 in Lewisville Texas just north of Dallas.

Owners Stephen Shepherd and Keith Steele used to work together in the office automation business in North Texas. After a successful career Stephen and Keith had retired  and were enjoying the usual benefits of retirement for successful business people... boredom.  Stephen's daughter's father-in-law has been selling short run specialty box manufacturing equipment in England and had been talking about the numerous opportunities that exist for business in the specialty box niche.

After doing his research Stepehen called Keith and said, "Lets make boxes." Steele joined Shepherd and the two opened a manufacturing facility in Lewsiville on November 3rd, 2008. The market for specialty boxes in the DFW area is quite strong. There is very little competition in the short run box making business and there are many small businesses that find the traditional large volume manufacturing process cumbersome. Ordering a 6 -12 month supply of boxes does allow a  lower cost per unit but that lower cost is ofset by the inventory storage and carrying costs associated with higher volume orders. Traditional American box manufacturing is high volume based and many manufacturing facilities have minimum volumes of 5,000 to 10,000 units which can be too much for smaller operations.

BoxWerkz also offers licensing opportunities. BoxWerkz is the sole distributor in the United States for the AutoBox machinery manufactured in England. English box making has traditionally be more localized and based on short runs due to the nature of the English transportation infrastructure. Poor quality roads and high fuel costs encourage short run box manufacturing and the equipment developed in England has set the quality standard for the industry.
