In children aged two to four, statistics show that falls are the most common cause of TBI, whereas older children are more susceptible to bicycle and auto accidents, with falls coming in a close second. causes TBI is responsible for approximately 19% of cases of pediatric brain trauma, with the death rate running higher among these cases. Work-related and industrial accidents are another cause, as are firearms and blast injuries from explosions, which are the leading causes of death and disability in war zones.
Common mechanisms for TBI include open head injury; closed head injury; deceleration injury (as from sudden braking in a car or truck accident; causing cranial impact); chemical or toxins; hypoxia (lack of oxygen); tumors; infection and stroke.
Across all age groups, the top three causes of TBI are vehicular accidents, firearms and falls.
There is no current cure for TBI.
