Drilling for Natural Gas in Coppell

One of the nation's largest natural gas reserves is located in and around the Dallas / Ft. Worth Metroplex. With the discovery of the Barnett Shale and the push to move towards alternate fuel sources, many residents are beginning to hear about, and see new activity in this industry.

Coppell City Council passed an Ordinance establishing reasonable and uniform limitations, safeguards and regulations for present and future operations related to the exploring, drilling, developing, producing, transporting and storing of oil and gas and other substances produced in association with oil and gas within the city to protect the health, safety and general welfare of the public; minimize the potential impact to property and mineral rights owners, protect the quality of the environment and encourage the orderly production of available mineral resources.

An oil or gas well permit shall be required for all proposed wells. Oil and gas wells are strictly prohibited within 300 feet of any occupied building (not used in operations on the drilling site), including, but not limited to residences, religious institutions, public buildings, hospitals, schools, public parks, or any business, and 200 feet from any railroad right-of-way.

A public hearing for an oil or gas well permit is required if the proposed well is to be located within 800 feet of any occupied building (not used in operations on the drilling site). Oil or gas wells located more than 800 feet from such uses may be approved by the oil and gas inspector/technical advisor without a public hearing. The 800-foot distance is measured on a straight line from the well bore, without regard to intervening structures or objects, to the closest exterior point of the building.

Drilling in Coppell is only permitted in areas zoned LI--"Light Industrial," PD-LI--"Planned Development-Light Industrial," or A--"Agricultural." View the Zoning Map.
