Water Supply Sources

The City of Coppell purchases treated water from the City of Dallas Water Utilities. The water comes from Lake Lewisville, down the Trinity River, then is pumped to the Elm Fork Treatment Plant at I-35 and Whitlock in Carrollton. The water is then put through a treatment process that includes ozone treatment (Dallas having one of the world's largest ozone facilities).

After being treated, the water is pumped into a 54" pipeline that serves Coppell, Irving, DFW Airport, Lewisville and Flower Mound. From the pipeline, Coppell receives water in two separate ground storage tanks (one 4-million gallon and one 6-million gallon) at Village Parkway and Kimbel Court. From there, the water is pumped into the Coppell system to supply water to the City and the City's 1.5 and 2 million-gallon elevated tanks and pressure to the system.

Water Quality

The quality of the water in the system has been checked many times prior to it reaching the customer's tap. The treatment plant has to meet quality guidelines set forth by federal and state regulatory agencies. After reaching the City, the Utility Division continuously samples and tests the water to ensure it meets system quality standards, until the time it reaches the customer. The Utility Division samples for bacteriological quality, lead and copper, trihalomethanes (by-product of chlorine that causes health effects), chlorimine residuals and other tests to ensure disinfectant residuals are properly maintained.

Watering your Lawn

Ideally, a lawn should be watered just before it begins to wilt. Most grasses take on a dull purplish cast and leaf blades begin to fold or roll. Grass under drought stress also shows evidence of tracks after someone walks across the lawn.  Common bermuda grass lawns can go 5 to 7 days or longer between waterings without loss of quality.

Early morning is considered the best time to water.  The wind is usually calm and the temperature is low so less water is lost to evaporation. The worst time to water is late evening because the lawn stays wet all night, making it more susceptible to disease.

It takes about 1/2 inch of water to achieve the desired wetting depth if the soil is high in sand, and about 3/4 inch of water if the soil is a loam. For soils high in clay, an inch of water is usually necessary to wet the soil to the desired depth.

If waterings are too light or too frequent the lawn may become weak and shallow-rooted, which in turn makes it more susceptible to stress injury.
