Irving School District Information 2008 1.Graduating seniors in the Class of 2008 earned approximately $31 million in scholarship offers. 2.IISD results of the 2007-2008 National Merit Scholarship competition include eight Semifinalists and 10 Commended students. Additionally, five students have been named National Hispanic Scholars and one student has been designated an Outstanding Participant in the National Achievement Scholarship Program for African American students. 3.Nimitz High School took first place in the State Large School Division of the Texas Academic Decathlon in 2004. Nimitz finished second at state competition in 1998, 2007 and 2008, third in 2001, fourth in 2002 and 2006, fifth in 2003, and sixth in 2005. Nimitz has won first in the Regional Academic Decathlon 18 of the past 21 years and placed second three times. 4.During a five-year period from 1999 to 2003, the IISD earned a Recognized District rating from the Texas Education Agency. The IISD has had an Academically Acceptable rating in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008 with the implementation of the more rigorous and comprehensive TAKS Assessment. 5.Twenty-six IISD schools earned 66 Gold Performance acknowledgements from the Texas Education Agency during the 2007-2008 school year. 6.Advanced Placement test results indicate 691 IISD students earned scores of 3, 4 or 5 and 107 students were recognized as AP Scholars during the 2007-2008 school year. 7.Students have access to technology through numerous classroom computers, computer labs and mobile multimedia stations. All students in grades 9-12 have laptop computers for use at home and school during the school year. All teachers receive laptop computers with connections to the IISD Network. In November 2007, $49.8 million in bond funds were approved by Irving ISD voters to be used to fund replacement technology for students and staff members, update server equipment for the IISD Network, and provide technology for new schools and facilities. In October 2001, $54.8 million in bond funds were approved to replace aging equipment and to provide equipment for new facilities and new programs. In October 1997, $47 million in bond funds were approved that funded a five-year instructional technology plan that included networking schools and other facilities with various software including e-mail and Internet access. 8.Microsoft Corporation selected the IISD as the first Microsoft Center of Excellence. With this designation, the IISD is being recognized as an innovator in the use of technology to enhance teaching and learning. 9.From more than 1,200 applicants across the United States, MacArthur High School was named one of the two best high schools at the Intel/Scholastic 21st Century Schools of Distinction Awards in 2004. 10.The United States Department of Education has designated three IISD schools as National Blue Ribbon Schools: Lamar Middle School, May 2000; Good Elementary School, May 2001; and MacArthur High School, May 2002. Good was also one of 12 schools in the U.S. and the only school in Texas to receive special recognition in technology in 2001. 11.The IISD English Language Learner population (41.5%) is the highest of all 15 school districts in Dallas County. IISD students speak 54 languages and represent 99 countries. 12.In November 2007, 58 percent of Irving ISD voters approved a $249.975 million School Bond Package. In 2001, IISD voters approved a $249.5 million School Bond Package by a three-to-one margin, and in 1997, IISD voters approved a $170 million School Bond Package by a two-to-one margin. 13.Graduates in the Class of 2008 completed almost 73,000 hours of community service. 14.The Partnerships In Education Program has more than 200 active alliances with businesses and other organizations and over 1,500 volunteers. 15.Irving Schools Foundation annually awards approximately $125,000 in student scholarships and teacher grants. 16.The 2008-2009 salary for a beginning teacher with a bachelor’s degree is $46,400 and the maximum salary for a veteran teacher with a master’s degree is $68,070. The IISD continues to provide 100% of the cost of the basic health insurance plan for all employees.
