Official Sports Report for February 24, 2008
Mizzou Baseball Downs Michigan State by OSR Staff DeLand, FL. - The Missouri Tigers improved to 2-0 on the season with a 14-9 win over Michigan State Saturday afternoon. The 6th-ranked Tigers jumped on top right away with a four-run first inning, and never looked back as Tim Jamieson's squad improved to 2-0 on the young season.
Missouri was actually outhit by the Spartans, 14-10, but MU's lineup exercised great patience against a wild Michigan State pitching staff. The Tigers worked MSU for 10 walks, in addition to being hit six times, including two each by DH Jacob Priday and C Dan Pietroburgo.
Priday got things started in the first when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, after 2B Austin Holt, CB Kurt Calvert and LF Aaron Senne all walked to begin the game. RF Ryan Lollis followed with a bases loaded walk, as did 3B Greg Folgia to make it 3-0. Pietroburgo followed with a one-out fielder's choice RBI to account for MU's four-run inning, as the Tigers scored 4 runs without the benefit of a hit.
Starting pitcher Rick Zagone worked four inning, giving up three runs on six hits while striking out seven Spartans. He left with MU holding a 5-3 lead, but in the very next half-inning, the Tigers exploded for six runs to bolt to an 11-3 margin, with Priday driving home two with a single.
Mizzou will play host team Stetson Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. (central).
