Jenn's Cleaning Tip of The Week

Commercial household cleaners have been around for decades and do a fairly good job of cleaning your home. They also tend to be expensive and potentially dangerous to your long-term health. There are many other natural alternatives that are less expensive and just as effective as these commercial cleaners that you can use to help you keep your home clean and smelling fresh.

One of the most basic ingredients to many of the home cleaning solutions is vinegar. Even on its own vinegar is a very effective cleaning agent, but can also be harmful to some surfaces like marble, so you need to be careful and be sure to test it on a surface first. The easiest way to use vinegar is mixed in a solution of 1 part vinegar to 1 part water. This can then be used in a standard spray bottle, and sprayed onto the surfaces you are looking to clean. This solution will help with everything from stain and spot removal to cutting through grease in the kitchen. Even though vinegar has a bit of a potent odor, this smell disappears quickly when it dries on a surface.

Another great natural cleaner is baking soda. This can be used to both clean surfaces and deodorize as well. Adding an open box of baking soda to your refrigerator will absorb any smells in there from particularly strong foods and ensure that other foods don’t take on their odor. When cleaning a surface, baking soda can be used like any other commercial cleaning powder and does a great job right out of the box. Sprinkling this on a wet surface will help you remove any grease with a little agitation from a damp sponge.

Another great cleaning aid is lemon juice. Most citrus juices are effective, but lemon can be used directly on a surface to clean and deodorize. To make it even easier you can simply cut a lemon in half, sprinkle on a little baking soda and use the lemon as you would a small sponge to loosen dirt and stains as you scrub. Lemon juice is particularly good at removing hard water stains and can help with polishing as well.

The advantages these natural cleaning products have go beyond simple cost savings. Even though these are less expensive than the commercially available cleaners, they are much safer as well. Studies have shown that certain people can have severe health problems when exposed to some of the materials found in these commercial cleaners. Also, the mixing of different types of cleaners on a surface can be even more dangerous since the combination of these chemicals can produce fumes that are very harmful to lungs and eyes.

Using a natural approach to these cleaning supplies gives you the peace of mind that you are making your home safer for your family as well as helping the environment. By not using these commercial cleaners you are eliminating the potential health hazards to your family and minimizing the long-term effects to the environment when they are washed down the drain and out to sea. All the while you are saving money as well.
