Jenn's Cleaning Tip of The Week
Cleaning your driveway is a project that you can easily do in an hour or so and will help you extend its useful life. By cleaning your driveway regularly you will protect the surface, improve the look of your home and help avoid the expense of replacement. No matter what material your driveway is made of, keeping it clean is a good idea and can be easy to do.
Most driveways are composed of either concrete or asphalt and both of these can be cleaned in similar ways. The trick with cleaning your driveway is to remove the debris that collects there every so often which helps you avoid a larger cleaning effort or damage to the surface. There are many things that can damage your driveway and paying a little attention to it a few times a year can save you a lot of money. Nature also plays a role in damaging your driveways surface and a routine cleaning will help remove the oils and saps that normally collect there before they can do any damage.
Concrete and asphalt driveways can be the most durable solution for many homeowners but still need to be cleaned to keep them looking good. Over time, oil from your cars, sap from nearby trees and debris from all of the vehicles that use your driveway can collect on its surface and start to damage it. The biggest danger to a most driveways is small rocks or stones that collect on their surface. Over time if these rocks are driven over by your cars they can start to break down the surface and cause damage. This kind of damage can take years to become noticeable, so it’s important to remove this surface debris as often as possible.
The simplest thing you can do for your driveway is to either sweep or blow it clean with a leaf blower. Most people only think of their leaf blowers in the fall when they are cleaning their yards, but they can also be a very effective tool on helping to keep your driveway clean. Many home improvement stores sell an attachment you can slide onto the end of your leaf blower that will concentrate the air in a smaller pattern. In a pinch you can also use a paper or Styrofoam coffee cup with the bottom cut out and attach this in place with some duct tape. This will help concentrate the airflow and help you blow your driveway clean. When doing this type of cleaning, be sure to move all of your cars out of the way as these smaller stones can nick the surface when they are being blown away. Start near your house and blow the surface towards the street. When you finally reach the end of your driveway, you can sweep up any debris that you have blown there.
For tougher cleaning jobs and to remove oil and other stains you can rent a power washer. These power washers will accelerate the water from a garden hose to a high velocity and the allow you to direct this stream through a wand at the driveway. When you use one of these be sure to use a wide nozzle and keep the wand moving in a sweeping pattern to avoid damaging the surface of your driveway. You can then follow this cleaning with a simple driveway sealer to protect it even further from the elements.
