Dallas Chiropractic Care, Shoulder Pain Treatment and Options That Will Provide Solutions to Reducing and Healing Your Pain.

As a Doctor of Chiropractic here in Dallas, Texas, I see quite a few patients who have various problems associated with shoulder pain.  I've taken the time to list some common conditions in order to help you understand your options and seek the best chiropractic care treatment possible. So the question you may be asking is "when do I need to call for chiropractic help for my shoulder pain?"

As with any pain or injury, the quicker you seek appropriate care the quicker the pain will go and in turn, allow you to resume your daily activities.  The sooner you get appropriate treatment for your shoulder, the less likely you are to get a recurring and chronic problem.  If you don't know what caused the shoulder pain, or if you're unsure of specifically how to treat your injury, you need to take action and contact your chiropractor to get help.  When I see a patient, I must diagnose the specific causes of the pain in the shoulder in order to design an effective treatment program that will restore complete use and control of the affected area.

Just a quick review of signs you should recognize that trigger the need to see your chiropractor.

  • Pain when you raise your arm over your head
  • Pain from an injury that causes deformity of the joint
  • Shoulder pain that prevents restful continued sleep each night
  • Shoulder pain that persists beyond several days
  • Inability to rotate your arm without pain
  • Swelling or significant bruising around the joint or arm
  • Constant need for pain medication to reduce shoulder pain

Now that you acknowledge the signs of shoulder pain, your chiropractor has to accurately diagnose the problem before any treatment can begin. If you should initially make the decision to treat yourself and are unsure of your own diagnosis, I caution you to seek medical advice from your chiropractor first before beginning trying to remedy your problem.  The treatments I've listed below, will not resolve every condition or injury, but will give you a proper foundation to help your situation.  You would think that bed rest and pain medication alone would work great to providing pain relief, but in the long term, this combination will more than likely act only as a temporary fix for what can be an ongoing issue. That being said, I do believe that there is the need for rest and pain reducing medication, but each will be just a part of the overall program.

Rest: Nothing new here, if you rest the joint as much as possible, this will help in reducing the inflammation and soreness. When you do rest, apply heat pads and ice packs to the area of pain and rotate each approximately every 20 minutes, and then repeat the process every 2-3 hours.

Over the counter and prescribed medication: Pain medication comes in many forms.  Tylenol, Advil, Ibuprofen, and Naproxen, are standard for off the shelf med's that will help lessen your pain.  If there is a need for stronger drugs to curb pain, then your chiropractor can recommend what will work and help you with getting the prescribed dosage.  There are natural alternatives to consider and your chiropractor can assist you with recommendations.

Stretching Exercises: A regimented stretching program can help strengthen muscles and ligaments around the joint.  Stretching can sometimes help eliminate shoulder problems, but overall it should be treated as just another part of the overall healing process.  Once you have a good routine you can follow, coordinate your progress with your doctor to make sure the program is benefiting both your shoulder and other areas of your body

Cortisone shots: Should it become necessary to aggressively treat your shoulder inflammation, chiropractors will sometimes recommend Cortisone shots.  This is a very powerful medication that targets the inflamed area of the shoulder.  The shot is administered directly into the affected area and you will receive almost instant relief from your pain.  Take the time to meet your doctor and discuss the benefits along with any possible side effects that might be incurred before getting the shot.  For most patients the benefits outweigh the negatives and should be used if necessary, but cannot be relied on as the primary treatment for defeating your shoulder pain.
