What is University Park Routine Dental Hygiene? (University Park Routine Dental Hygiene provided by Randy A. Parham, D.D.S.)

Dental and oral hygiene is the practice of keeping your mouth, gums and teeth healthy to prevent dental problems and halitosis, or bad breath.

The best way to practice proper University Park routine dental hygiene is by developing strong and stringent daily routine of brushing and flossing, also known as teeth cleaning. Dr. Parham’s practice typically recommends brushing after every meal, or at least twice daily. Daily flossing is also encouraged, as well as bi-annual check-ups and University Park routine dental hygiene cleanings from Dr. Parham and his staff.

Along with proper cleanings, a healthy diet low in sugar with little or no soda and rich in fresh vegetables is recommended.

University Park routine dental hygiene that includes daily brushing and flossing helps remove the build-up of plaque and tarter on teeth that cause cavities, gingivitis and gum disease. Severe gum disease causes one-third of all adult tooth loss.

Good University Park Routine Dental Hygiene
(University Park Routine Dental Hygiene provided by Randy A. Parham, D.D.S.)

The key to healthy teeth and gums is keeping plaque and food decay from building up in your mouth. Plaque and food decay attract harmful bacteria that cause cavities, gum disease, and persistent bad breath.

Your tongue attracts bacteria, too. During the normal process of eating, tiny fragments of food collect on your tongue. As these fragments decay, bacteria create a filmy white coating on the top of your tongue.

Practice the following four-step University Park routine dental hygiene to keep plaque and harmful bacteria from building up in your mouth.

Easy Four-Step University Park Routine Dental Hygiene (University Park Routine Dental Hygiene provided by Randy A. Parham, D.D.S.)

  1. Brush your teeth and use an antiseptic mouthwash twice daily (after breakfast and before bedtime)
  2. Use dental floss daily
  3. Clean your tongue regularly by using a toothbrush or a tongue scraper
  4. See your dentist for University Park routine dental hygiene checkups

A professional cleaning as part of your University Park routine dental hygiene is provided by a dental hygienist and typically includes:

  • Tooth scaling and root planing. That is the removal or plaque and other build-up that can cause inflammation of your gums. This is a non-surgical procedure where plaque and tarter from above and below your gum line are removed (scaling), and rough spots on your teeth are made smooth (planing).
  • Tooth polishing.
  • Debridement (if too much tarter has built up). This is an additional step, oftentimes the initial step, in the removal of heavy plaque build-up.
  • Fluoride treatment
  • Flossing

If I brush my teeth as recommended, why do I need to floss? (University Park Routine Dental Hygiene provided by Randy A. Parham, D.D.S.)

The use of dental floss is an important and necessary element of proper University Park routine dental hygiene, because it removes the plaque and decaying food from between your teeth, which can cause gum irritation and cavities. Flossing is one of the only methods of removing excess plaque and food from between your teeth, and is recommended after every meal or snack and before bedtime.
