In May of 1997, I filed physical bankruptcy. Like thousands of men and women around the world - maybe like you, too - I had gastric bypass surgery. I knew it would scar me for life, but it could give me a brand new start. The operation shrank the size of my stomach, making it physically impossible to eat more than just a few bites at a meal. The weight immediately began to melt away, and within one year, I had lost nearly 200 pounds. But I had only treated the symptom. Like taking aspirin for the headache of a brain tumor, the problem seemed to go away, but the cause of my insanity was still lurking beneath the surface.I had changed my body, but I had missed the mark. I applied a physical solution to a mental, emotional and spiritual problem. I only addressed the symptoms, rather than the disease itself. I never regret having the surgery, because it gave me a second chance to physically live, which bought me time and put me in a place to deal with the real issues. Now that time had come.
