Shingle recycling has gained momentum in recent years due to comprehensive research & enhancement of their potential marketability. Many industries are taking advantage of this unique chance to promote environmental sustainability & conservation through re-use & recycling; one industry trying to embrace this effort is the construction industry which faces increasing waste in  daily activities, especially in roofing materials.

Below is detailed information on recycling shingles.

Waste Production

There are approximately eleven million tons of shingle waste produced annually in North America, including:

    • Scrap material
    • Extras from installation
    • Demolition debris
    • Tear-offs
    • Re-roofing

This is an alarming statistic & quite threatening to the environment.

Waste Management

Numerous governmental agencies & other organizations are adopting strategies that will work at reducing the negative environmental effects of residential demolition & resulting residual debris. As technology evolves, shingle recycling is becoming an efficient means to minimize & prevent the adverse impact of the refuse on the environment, while also helping economic development.

Products, Benefits & Application

Recycled asphalt shingles are often changed into: hot-mix asphalt to use as a paving supplement, cold patch for pothole repair, temporary roads, driveways & parking areas, dust control & a sub-base for road construction. When used as a road paving material, it can enhance pavement performance; prevent rutting; avert thermal fatigue & cracking. They are resistent to wear & moisture damage as well.

In a recent article for The Monitor, Rhino Tuff Roofing president Bret Hannah, was interviewed about how his company contributes to recycling programs for his business.

Rhino Tuff Roofing takes them (used shingles) to paving company Terra Firma Materials LLC, where they pay to have the shingles ground up and used as a material for pavements.

Terra Firma Materials participates in a program called Recycling Asphalt Shingles, or RAS, where discarded shingles are recycled to serve other purposes.“It’s great that the shingles are actually going to be used, too, instead of just discarded at a landfill,” Hannah said.
