In her article Clinton Cancels Rally Appearance: A Case of Unmanaged Ego, Dr. Sandy Gluckman, leadership traits expert, keynote speaker and author of Who's In The Driver's Seat discusses how Senator Clinton's unmanaged ego prevented her and Governor Palin from showing bi-partisan opposition to terrorism. Senator Clinton canceled her New York rally appearance because she was prepared to exert more effort in opposing Governor Palin than Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, President of Iran.
According to Sandy Gluckman, whether in business or politics, leadership traits displayed by spirited rather than ego driven leaders are:
1. Humility
2. Vision-driven
3. Authenticity
4. Courage
5. Team building
6. Profitable decision making
7. See the funny side of life
Certainly, there are different perspectives on which of these leadership traits Senator Clinton actually possesses. However, according to Dr. Sandy Gluckman, her failure to appear at the rally demonstrates that one of the most important leadership traits, humility, is lacking in Senator Clinton. Humility has two aspects. First it is the emotional capacity and maturity to look at ourselves and take responsibility for the impact our behaviors and words are having on others – both positive and negative. Spirited leaders do this spontaneously without any embarrassment or defensiveness. Senator Clinton clearly did not show maturity by snubbing Governer Palin and pressuring event organizers to disinvite her. By not not attending the event and preventing another highly influential woman from showing bi-partisan opposition to Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Senator Clinton cheated herself, Governor Palin and our country.
The second aspect of humility is the emotional maturity to recognize the value of others. Spirited leaders know that they cannot achieve their goals without the diverse talent and perspectives of others. Senator Clinton appears unable to put aside her political disappointment to see the positive attributes of Governor Palin and work toward the common goal of reducing terrorist access to nuclear weapons. This is not the level of emotional maturity we would expect from a business leader, much less from a woman who was campaigning to become leader of the free world.

Sandy Gluckman has done extensive research on the traits of both ineffective leaders and highly effective leaders such as Richard Branson, Howard Shultz, Herb Kelleher and, as a native of South Africa, Nelson Mandela. She is passionate about teaching the leadership traits that these highly influential individuals demonstrate to political and business leaders. The fundamental principal of her Leadership Traits Development Program is that by putting your ego in the passenger seat, your spirited-self becomes much more persuasive because it is humble, authentic, courageous, and passionate. Positive and negative examples of these these traits are displayed daily by all types of leaders. As a keynote speaker, Dr. Gluckman uses story telling and real-life examples to illustrate both sides of these leadership traits to her audiences to prompt self-awareness of their own abilities to keep their ego in the passenger seat and lead with spirit.
