Leadership Styles: Ego and the 2008 Election | Sandy Gluckman Leadership Speaker

In her article Presidential Politics 2008: Will Ego Be the Undoing of Obama?, leadership speaker Sandy Gluckman speaks about her views on how ego plays into the leadership styles of Barack Obama, John McCain, Hillary Clinton and John Edwards.  Gluckman believes that truly great leaders recognize the detriment of an overblown ego and embody leadership styles that strike a balance between ego and humility.

According to Sandy Gluckman, whether in business or politics, highly effective leaders manage their egos to embrace a leadership style that is humble, driven by vision, authentic, courageous, team building, focused on profitable decision making and able to see the funny side of life.

As we get closer to electing a new U.S. President, Gluckman points out that Barack Obama seems to have allowed his ego to overshadow the authentic and humble style that gave him the edge over Hillary Clinton.  In her opinion, he has bought in to the media hype comparing him to JFK and seems to be far less humble - "speaking from his head instead of from his heart".  She believes that John McCain is far less dynamic that Barack Obama.  However, he seems to be doing a better job of managing his ego to keep his humility, sense of humor and authenticity in tact.  Gluckman wonders if he will be able to maintain control of it long term since he's admitted to having a problem with his ego and temper.  In Sandy Gluckman's estimation, Hillary Clinton lost the democratic nomination thanks to her ego-driven behavior, not to mention her husband's, and John Edward's ego was to blame for the scandal that plagued him as well.

As a leadership speaker, Dr. Gluckman uses story telling and real-life examples to illustrate all extremes of these leadership styles to her audiences to prompt self-awareness of their own abilities to keep their ego in the passenger seat and lead with spirit.  Visit Sandy Gluckman's website for more information on her book Who's In The Driver's Seat and or to book her as a leadership speaker.
