Everyone dreads putting the lights on a Christmas tree. A major problem people run into is using too long a strand in one circuit. Some strands have as many as 300 lights. I use six 50-light strands end to end instead -- it's a lot easier to replace one 50-light strand, should it burn out, than a complete 300-light strand.

When putting the lights on, start at the bottom and work from the center of the tree to the ends of each branch until you reach the top.

Bead garlands are a good way to add sparkle and decoration to your tree, whether or not you have a lot of ornaments.

Hang the beads before adding the ornaments. Tie your ornaments onto the tree with ribbon. This not only adds extra color and dimension but also helps secure them -- especially your fragile collectible ornaments. To make sure the crown does not slip off the top of the ornament, use some superglue to reinforce it.

When a Christmas ball loses its crown, instead of throwing it away, slip the ball onto the end of the tree branch for an interesting effect.

Accentuate garlands and wreaths with ornaments, pinecones, and fruit. Insert a floral wire through an apple, and then wire it into the greenery. The same can be done for ornaments and pinecones.

The chandelier in the dining room or kitchen is a great place to add decoration. Tie ornaments on with ribbons, and scallop a garland of greenery through the arms.

If you don't have a mantel for stockings, hang them from a garland on a banister, bookshelf, or window. Then add lights and ribbon.

Greenery arrangements will last for weeks in the foyer, dining room, or elsewhere in the house. Just add some fresh flowers to them when you entertain on special occasions.

Most important: Enjoy your decorating. Ask a few friends over to help. Put on some Christmas music, open a bottle of wine, and begin celebrating the season.
