Orchid Care Instructions
When you first receive your orchid, choose a spot for it and move it from that spot as little as possible. Once the orchid plant acclimates to a certain location, it tends to stay the healthiest when left in one spot. After receiving your orchid, wait 10 days before watering it. When you’re ready to water, remove the orchid from the decorative container and place it in a deep sink. Do not remove the orchid plant from plastic “grow pot” when watering. Adjust the water temperature to warm, not hot, and lightly spray potting material at the base of the orchid. It is best to saturate the potting medium by continuing to spray the potting medium until the excess water is flowing from the bottom of the grow pot. Allow the orchid to drain in the sink for several minutes and then return it to the decorative container. After the first watering, water your orchid once a week, preferably in the morning. As long as you allow your orchid to fully drain and prevent it from sitting in accumulated water in the decorative container, you will not over-water your orchid.
It is normal for the leaves of your orchid plant to be bent with a “drooping” look. This is natural with most orchid varieties and is not indicative of an unhealthy plant. The leaves of your orchid should remain green and firm to the touch even when the orchid is not blooming.
Over time, the orchid blooms will begin to shrivel and can be pinched off and discarded. If you are interested in re-blooming your orchid, it is best to cut down the orchid bloom spike(s). An orchid bloom spike is any branch of your orchid that contained a bloom. As you run your fingers along the orchid bloom spike, you will feel several “bumps” or nodules along the spike. If all of the blooms have been removed from the bloom spike, cut the spike just above one of the nodules near the base of the orchid to encourage new growth. Continue watering your orchid weekly and place near a window that receives strong morning sunlight. It is also recommended that you purchase a generic orchid fertilizer at a local garden center and fertilize according the manufacturer’s recommendation until a new bloom spike forms. Re-blooming an orchid requires patience and perseverance. If your orchid does not grow a new bloom spike within 60 days, try moving it to a different location in your home or office. A multitude of factors combine to encourage an orchid to bloom (humidity, air flow, light, etc.) and simply relocating your orchid may make all the difference.
