What is the difference between interior plantscaping, interiorscaping or interior landscaping?

Defined, the verb landscaping means to adorn or improve (a section of ground) by contouring and by planting flowers, shrubs, or trees. In botany, scapes are flowering stems, usually leafless, rising from the crown or roots of a plant with a single flower or many flowers, depending on the species. Greenery designs are usually what is called interiorscapes. In the interior landscaping industry, interior landscaping is therefore also known as plantscaping and interiorscaping, and interior landscape firms will often use one of the three terms or a combination of them to describe what they do.

What services can an interior plantscaper offer?

Most interior plantscapers offer several different services including the sale, leasing, installation and maintenance of interior plants for your place of business or residence. A reputable interior plantscaper will consult with you and offer recommendations as to which service will best suit your needs for your landscape and some firms also have extensive design and consultation experience and offer a wide range of unusual individualized plantscaping services.

There is a wide range in the quality of actual horticultural and maintenance services that you will receive from different interior landscapers. The extent of the maintenance services of any interior plantscaper is usually a good indicator of the degree of professionalism of the firm you are dealing with. Most firms offer some type of maintenance guarantee. It's a good idea to find out what this guarantee covers, including replacing plants promptly as needed.

Before you pick your interior landscaping company, try to schedule a visit with the company and ask about their past and present projects. What is the scale of what they have accomplished to date, and do these projects fit with your own objectives? Can you visit some of the plantscapes that the company has done?

As with any business, the firm’s reputation and performance are highly important criteria for selection. As each client has different needs, the interiorscaper needs to be able to design and install interior plantscapes from the very simple to the complex and exotic and landscape maintenance is also very important.

The plantscaping company needs extensive knowledge in both landscaping design and horticulture. Their designers, installation specialists, maintenance technicians, floral designers and greenhouse personnel should be ready to execute your project, big or small, in a satisfactory manner. A good designer has a solid knowledge of landscape design principles and understands that there is more to the effective use of plants in a business than the simple installation of a little greenery. Interiors must be fully integrated to make them work effectively. Color schemes and overall decor must be analyzed and a theme must be recognized or decided upon and followed throughout the entire decor in order to make the fullest impact. He/she can also choose the correct plants for different areas of your environment based on their differing light needs, and choose containers that properly accentuate and work with the decor instead of detracting from it.

Installation of interior garden plants can be a complex endeavor. It includes the acquisition of your plants, individual plant selection by height, shape, coloration and maturity according to the specifications required by your project, and the acclimatization of your plants. This acclimatization, or adaptation process, is the single most important aspect of the installation process in order to ensure that your interiorscape remains healthy.
