First things first, what will be your power source? Similar to the battery in your car an automatic gate opener takes a 12 Volt DC power source. Naturally, the battery needs to be recharged either on a continual basis or periodical basis. Most of us however are not going to remember to periodically walk out to the driveway and recharge the battery. A simple resolution to this is an AC DC converter that runs from a standard 110 volt AC outlet from the home to the control unit. The converter will provide a continuous charge.  One note on using the converter, you will need a moderator to make sure that when the battery reaches a certain level it turns off. Ideally, you will want the battery to maintain a baseline charge rate, avoiding peaking to high or too low which can cause damage. Simply enough this item is called a “Maintainer”, any automatic fence opener distributor can provide one or you can purchase one in your local hardware store.

If you are into being environmental there is a green option for maintaining the battery charge. A solar panel can provide a continual source of DC current to the battery. As with some “green products” this option can be costly but certainly worth looking into for the eco-friendly.

You’ve got the gate powered up, now how are you going to get in and out? A radio controlled opener is the simplest solution. You can purchase one for each car in the household or even close family. If your driveway is the main entrance to your home make sure to take into account how guests will enter. You can hope that most people have a cell phone with them to call you for access or perhaps consider an intercom system. Of course, the intercom system will add expense to your system, with the popularity of cell phones more and more people are choosing to have their guests call from the front gate. If you do decide to go with an intercom system there are multiple options but you may consider the Doorbell Fon System. Your guests will be able to press a key on the outside callbox and it will in return ring whichever phone you designate. You can then safely check who is at your gate by speaking with them on the phone and press the star key to allow them access.
