Plano Fence Company owner Sean Eubanks, President of Texas State Fence Company, answers your questions about fencing.Q: I have some lumber leftover from another project and I am interested in building a wood fence. What should I consider? There are specific considerations when you shop for lumber for a wood fence because the lumber will be in direct contact with the ground....A: You must be carefull what lumber you select because not all lumber is suitable for wood fencing. Because the lumber in a fence is exposed to the elements it should be made of a rot-resistant wood such as cedar or it should pressure-treated lumber. The lumber should also be painted or stained. Fence Posts are usually 4 x 4 lumber that is at least 8' long (some of which will be underground). Fence panels (pickets) are typically 1.25" thick x 6" wide, with a length to match the height of the wood fencing. Lumber dimensions for the rails vary according to the style of wood fencing that you choose (in some cases, you'll be able to use the same lumber for the rails as you used for the panels).Q: I need a privacy fence and prefer wood as a material. What are my options?Below is a brief overview of wood fence types.A: Wood fences provide many attractive options for fences designed to protec privacy. Here are some of the various options available:Stockade style is an example of a fence design that can afford a solid barrier between your yard and the prying eyes of neighbors. Stockade fences result in near total privacy. Masonry materials such as brick can do the same but they costs significantly more than a wood fence. Some people prefer to compromise on privacy, choosing wood fences with a certain amount of airiness to them, to avoid completely fencing out the outer world. Tall picket fencing is Lattice fencing represents another fence design option. An alternative to consider to the solid bariier types of fencing presented above is a hybrid fence design. A hybrid design can incorporate both a solid barrier for the bottom portion (i.e. three-quarters of the fencing height) with a lattice style on top to provide visual interest.Plano Fence Company (Texas State Fence Company) installs new fencing, repairs and maintains existing fencing, and designs integrated fencing systems for both residential and commercial clients in the Dallas, Fort Worth, Frisco, Plano, Carrollton, Coppell, McKinney and other areas of North Texas.
