Allen Fence Company owner Sean Eubanks, President of Texas State Fence Co.,  discusses some common wood fence options

So, you just finished another project and you have some lumber leftover and you are interested in building awood fence. Here are some things to consider.

There are some important considerations to keep in mind when you shop for wood fence materials because the lumber will be in direct contact with the ground and will be exposed to the natural elements.

You should be cautions of what type of wood you select because not all lumber is equally suited to be used as wood fence materials. Because the wood in a fence is exposed to the weather it should be made of a rot-resistant wood such as cedar.  A good alternative is to use pressure-treated lumber. The lumber should also be painted or stained for additional protection from the weather.

Fence Posts are most often made of 4 x 4 lumber that is at least 8' long (some of which will be in the ground). Fence panels (pickets) are usually 1.25" thick x 6" wide, with a length to match the height of the wood fencing. Lumber dimensions for the rails vary according to the style of wood fencing that you choose (in some cases, you'll be able to use the same lumber for the rails as you used for the panels).

So, you want a privacy fence and prefer wood as a material. What are your options?

Wood fences provide many attractive options for fences designed to protec privacy. You are really just limited by your imagination. Here are some of the more common options that are available:

The Stockade style is an example of a fence design that affords a solid barrier between your yard and your neighbors. Stockade style fences result in near total privacy. Masonry materials such as brick can do the same but they costs significantly more than a wood fence.

Some home owners prefer to compromise on privacy by choosing wood fences with a certain amount of open-airiness to them.  This avoids completely fencing out the outer world and can also increase the air flow in the enclosed area. Tall picket fencing and Lattice fencing represents other fence design options.

A good alternative to solid bariier types of fencing (presented above) would be to consider a hybrid fence design. A hybrid fence design can integrate both a solid barrier for the bottom portion (i.e. three-quarters of the fencing height) with a lattice style on top to provide visual interest.
